My Story
Hi, I'm Michael Russell, and I was born and raised in Kinston, North Carolina. Growing up, I spent a lot of time at my grandmother's house, soaking up those hot summers with plenty of family and outdoor fun.
I was an active member of St. Mark Church Ministries in Kinston, which shaped me into a humble, God-fearing person with a strong desire to help others. This early influence sparked my ambition to attend a Historically Black College.
After high school in 2001, I started at community college and then transferred to North Carolina Central University (NCCU). I majored in Public Administration and graduated with honors in 2006. I went on to earn my Masters in Education Management and Human Resources from Strayer University in 2012, and later completed my Teacher Licensure in Middle School Social Studies at NCCU in 2014.
I've always been passionate about education and making a positive impact. In Durham, NC, I worked with Durham Public Schools and served as an Eagle Ambassador for future Eagles. I was also active in the NCCU Gospel Choir Worship and Praise Inspirational (WPI).
After graduating from NCCU, I stayed in Durham to continue my work with the public schools until moving to Hyattsville, MD, in 2015. Now, I serve as a Senior Leader for a DC Charter School Network and am an active member of the DC Metro Alumni Chapter for NCCU.
Through my Mr. NCCU Alumni 2024 campaign, I aim to carry on the legacy of the Royal Court by supporting service and scholarships that benefit our amazing university.

My Why
As a first-generation college graduate in my family, this campaign is deeply personal for me. I'm passionate about creating opportunities for not just other first-gen students, but anyone facing financial hardships in college.
